Writer Speak
So you know what I’m talking about with all of my abbreviations, I’ve compiled a list of all the slang us wordies use –
- WIP - Work In Progress, usually pertaining to a novel
- MS/S - Again, usually pertaining to a novel but can reference any length of story
- MC - Main Character
- POV - Point Of View, referencing the first person (I), second person (you) or third person (he/she) method of telling a story
- Flash - A very short piece of fiction no more than 1,000 words
- Carnival - Usually of the flash fiction variety, a group of volunteer writers is given a topic on which to base their story, divulged by a pre-determined leader, they then have X number of days/weeks to write the story and submit the permalink to the story in their blog to the leader, once the time is up, the leader then posts all of the compiled story links in their own blog for the rest of the participants to read and comment on
- Sub/s - Submissions, usually short pieces to various venues
- Query - The letter that sells your novel to agents and publishers
- YA - Young Adult, one of many genres in the book world
